When it rains it pours, or at least leaks fluid our of his PIK line.

As if little man hadn't been through enough today about four this afternoon the Dr. was looking at his x ray from this afternoon when they placed his tube and she noticed that there was a very cloudy spot in his right lung.  It was fluid that had built up between his lungs and the pleural sack.  The fluid had to be drained using a needle and syringe They pulled out 15 ML out of his lungs (about 1/2 an ounce).  Luckily it was nothing too serious.  It was just that the vein his PIK line(a central line IV) was in had worn out and the fluid that was being fed into the line was leaking into the pleural space.   The PIK line was removed and an ordinary IV was put in to replace it since his IV needs are much less than they were in the past.   With the PIK line out the fluid should not return and he should be feeling better in a few days.   The fluid in his lungs is most likely what caused his respiratory distress this morning and with luck he will be off his ventilator again soon.
