Today has been stressful...

Today has been one of those days for our little man.   He has been off his ventilator for three days now and had been doing quite well on his assisted C-Pap.   But it looks like it was just too much for him and he got all tuckered out this morning.   His blood gasses and x-rays were all still good when the Dr. checked him at nine this morning but by the time Joe and I got to the hospital a little past ten thirty he didn't look very good. His nurse had noticed as well and told us he had been really agitated for the past half hour.   I commented on how pale he was looking and she agreed.   She went and asked the Dr. to look at him again.  Dr. C. came and took a look at him and she was really surprised at how he looked.  He had looked much better earlier in the morning.   She then listened to his lungs and heart and decided that he needed to go back on his ventilator.   Putting him back on the ventilator of course meant intubating him again which if any of you have ever seen this done or had this done you know it is not a fun process for patients or medical personnel.   But he got through it ok.
After he was put back on his ventilator he had to have an eye exam which was probably even more traumatic for him than being intubated.   They had to use those little springs to keep his eyes open like in the movie A Clockwork Orange and they used a little cotton tipped probe to move his eyes around.  It was pretty traumatic even to watch.  His eyes were numbed with drops and he was under sedation from being tubed but you could still tell he was mad as hell.
When we left at 12:30 he was sleeping and looked really relieved to be left alone.  His color was improving and he seemed more content than he had earlier.
Everyday a new adventure in the NICU.
